Charville Primary School - English

English is at the core of our new school curriculum. We are committed to raising standards in Writing and it is our school priority. Children are taught the key skills and knowledge through English but these are developed, practiced and reinforced throughout the curriculum.

In Key Stages 1 and 2 we use the new National Curriculum alongside our own School Curriculum which is based around key texts closely linked to the topic they are studying. Interesting opportunities for learning are carefully planned across a range of subjects with skills in English spanning all subjects. The children develop their ability to listen, speak, read and write for a range of purposes preparing them for a successful future. We believe that children should have many opportunities to develop language to learn and to communicate imaginatively.

Speaking and Listening
Throughout the school, opportunities to develop childrens’ spoken language in a range of contexts underpin the development of reading and writing. Pupils are encouraged to speak clearly, confidently and with expression in order to communicate their ideas and feelings. They are taught to understand and use the conventions for discussion.
Pupils develop their ability to explain their understanding of books and other reading, and to prepare their ideas before they write using speaking and listening activities. They are encouraged to discuss their ideas in order to make sense of their learning.

In our changing world, high quality writing is as important now as ever and we at Charville are committed to preparing our children in the best way possible. We encourage writing to be accurate, purposeful and creative. By explicitly modelling and teaching writing strategies across their learning journey, skills are embedded and can continue to develop throughout an individual’s lifetime. We ensure extensive time is given to support critical and creative discussions, sharing texts and providing a wide range of writing opportunities.

Importance of reading
We aim for all children to read widely and often across a range of subjects to a high standard.  We encourage children to foster their love of reading throughout the school.

In the EYFS and KS1 we use Letters and Sounds as a basis for the teaching of Phonics. As part of learning to read children bring home library books and scheme books (where appropriate) to share at home. In school the children read in daily Guided Reading sessions alongside reading based tasks and also have some opportunities to read 1:1.  We would encourage children to read daily for 10-15 minutes at home as this reinforces the skills that they are learning in school.

Phonics is a way of teaching children to read quickly and skilfully. They are taught how to:
  • identify the sounds linked to individual letters and groups of letters (, ai, or).
  • blend these sounds together from left to right to make a word.
Children can then use this knowledge to ‘de-code’ new words that they hear or see. This is the first important step in learning to read.

The children have access to a range of different schemes including Dragonfly, Rigby Star and Oxford Reading Tree. These are book-banded into a range of colours.  This enables the children to choose a home reading book at a level that is appropriate for them. 
Comprehension skills are developed in Guided Reading sessions through pupils’ experience of high-quality discussion with the teacher, as well as from reading and discussing a range of stories, poems and non-fiction within English lessons.
